About NUPLE
The Center for Research and Teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (NUPLE) is composed of faculty, staff and undergraduate and graduate students involved in research and outreach (extension) activities related to the teaching and learning of Portuguese as a foreign language. NUPLE was created to meet the needs related to the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language at UFSC and its main goal is to serve as a space where activities in the field of Portuguese as a foreign language are coordinated, supported and encouraged.
The specific objectives of NUPLE are to: develop teaching programs, research projects and instructional materials (printed and in other media); provide consulting services; offer training and professional development; organize events; systematize documents and publications with the aim of creating a database and providing bibliographic support; and encourage the production and publication of works in the field.
The main projects developed by NUPLE are as follows:
1) Extracurricular language courses – teaching Portuguese to international students and other non-native speakers.
2) Special courses – teaching Portuguese to groups of foreign students with common backgrounds or goals.
3) Agreements with educational institutions abroad: a) teaching Portuguese and promoting student and faculty exchange; b) developing assessment tools for students studying Portuguese abroad.
4) Administration of the CELPE-Bras Exam – Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners, developed and granted by the Ministry of Education, and the only officially recognized Brazilian certificate of proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign language.
