History

The Center for Studies of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (NUPLE) at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) was created in 1999.

Professor Susana Maria Fontes, now retired, “is part of the history of teaching Portuguese as a Second Language (PL2) at UFSC, as she participated in the implementation of courses aimed at PL2 instruction as early as the 1980s, and, in 1999, in the creation of the Center for Studies of Portuguese as a Foreign Language – NUPLE. As head of NUPLE, Susana coordinated the ongoing offer of seven courses in PL2 each semester, in addition to intensive courses offered occasionally in partnership with international educational institutions, as well as elective courses for teacher education in the field. Thanks to Professor Susana Fontes’s work, UFSC has been one of the pioneering institutions (since 1999) in administering the proficiency exam accredited by the Ministry of Education (MEC) – the CELPE-Bras Exam” (SILVEIRA; EMMEL, 2015, pp. 7–8).
